Body image is the perception that a person has of his/her physical self and the thoughts and feelings that result from that perception. These feelings can be positive, negative or neutral and are influenced by individual and environmental factors.
- Positive body-image – People who accept the way they look and feel good about their bodies most of the time, have a positive body image. People with a positive body image also understand that how they look does not determine their self-worth.
- Negative body image develops when someone feels that her or his body does not measure up to family, social, or media ideals. This happens when compare themselves against the standards of beauty commonly seen in the media.
- Body image and self-esteemSome people struggle with their self-esteem and body image when they begin puberty because it is a time when the body goes through many changes. These changes, combined with wanting to feel accepted by ones friends, makes us compare ourselves with others. The trouble with this is, not everyone grows or develops at the same time or in the same way
Tips for positive body image
- Appreciate all that your body can do.
- Keep a top-ten list of things you like about yourself.
- Look at yourself as a whole person.
- Surround yourself with positive people.
- Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you feel good about your body.
- Work with your body, not against it.
- Do something nice for yourself-something that lets your body know you appreciate it. Eg. Take a bubble bath, make time for a nap, find a peaceful place outside to relax.
When you feel good about yourself and who you are, you carry yourself with a sense of confidence, self-acceptance, and openness that makes you beautiful. Beauty is a state of mind, not a state of your body.
